Biography:
Founded in the suburb of Vällingby, Stockholm, Gösta Berlings Saga emerged in 2000, sparked by the creative synergy between keyboardist David Lundberg and drummer Alexander Skepp. Initially inspired by the 60s duo Hansson & Karlsson, the band expanded its sonic palette in 2004 with the addition of bassist Gabriel Tapper and guitarist Mathias Danielsson, leading to their debut album Tid Är Ljud in 2006. After Danielsson’s departure, Einar Baldursson joined, contributing to the darker and more complex sound of their upcoming albums Detta Har Hänt (2009) followed by Glue Works (2011). These esoteric early releases of manipulated sound and melody stood apart from the rest of the progressive pack, eschewing clichés and nostalgia in favour of a fervently forward-thinking ethos. Although undoubtedly influenced by the greats of prog, art rock, electronica and the avant-garde, Gösta Berlings Saga have remained thrillingly impervious to categorisation.
In 2017, the band underwent another evolution as Baldursson exited and guitarist Rasmus Booberg stepped in, followed shortly by the arrival of percussionist and multi-instrumentalist Jesper Skarin. With renewed energy and a revitalized lineup, the band unleashed two groundbreaking albums, ET EX (2018) and Konkret Musik (2020), under the InsideOut Records banner. These records, brimming with inventive and fearless experimentation, infused with even more electronic sounds that earlier introduced a whole new audience to Gösta Berlings Saga’s ingenious approach to rock music. Uncompromising and utterly distinct, they solidified the band’s belief that staying true to their own artistic vision was the only way forward.
As Gösta Berlings Saga approaches the milestone of their 25th anniversary, the band is gearing up for the release of their highly anticipated new album, slated for 2025 and to be released on Pelagic Records. This upcoming record promises to be a bold continuation of the band’s legacy—a masterful blend of intricate songwriting, unpolished quirky rock and a fearless disregard for genre limitations and their own past. This album isn’t just a continuation of their journey; it’s a bold statement that, even after two decades, the band’s best work may still be ahead of them.
